Siem Reap & Phnom Penh

My 5 days 4 nights Cambodia trip ended on 17th Dec. We started off in Siem Reap. On the 1st day we visited Tonlesap. Imagine the whole family ( min 4 kids , average 8 kids) squeezed in a wooden house which is the size of our bedroom. They have no power supply and depend on the river for a living. When tourism booms, many rely on selling fruits and drinks to the tourists for a living. Majority of the Cambodians are living in slums, eat whatever they lay their hands on ( eg all kinds of insects) and live each day as it pass. Their pay is really pathetic, massage girl gets 30 US per month while a school teacher only receives 25US. ( 1US = 4000 Riel) Most of the Cambodians do not have a passport as each costs 50US. They are forced to take up extra jobs to earn more money.Free education ( up to high school ) and medical services for the locals. It might sound ideal but free doesnt equates quality. Many times the patients are unable to receive treatment in time. To add on, with the unbearable heat, their 'unique' diet and poor living conditions resulted in their lifespan at only 56. We are truly very blessed to be living in a country like Singapore. However, many are still not contented and failed to treasure what they have.
